Megan 2022 directed by Gerard Johnston

Megan became a horror icon for this decade when the film was released, but it wasn’t something that I was interested in at the time. Directed by Gerad Johnston with a screenplay by Aleka Cooper, it is currently streaming on Netflix. As a teenager, I gravitated towards monsters and ghosts in horror, and less slasher flicks. And while I liked sci-fi, it was usually more aliens and teen love triangles than anything else. I

As an adult, I’ve found myself drawn to horror because nothing is scarier than what I watch on the news. At least with horror, I know it’s fake. For the most part. Although if we look at how the tech bros are advancing, they’ll probably be Megan’s being handed out at Christmas give or take a few years if they haven’t already and I just missed it.

The film tells the story of Cady, (played by Violet McGraw), who moves in with her aunt Gemma (Allison Williams) after the tragic loss of her parents in a car accident. Gemma works for a futuristic toy company called Funki, where she is working on an AI powered doll, otherwise known as Megan. As Gemma struggles to parent Cady by herself, she ends up getting inspired to create a doll that can do it for her. Megan ends up taking her role as Cady’s protector too seriously, and things quickly get out of hand.

I was initially unimpressed by the trailers for this film, and it became so meme’d that I wasn’t sure if it was good or not. But the film deals with the topic of grief surprisingly well, and Williams and McGraw played off each other well as disconnected aunt and niece struggling to find their place as a new family after losing their own.
