Frybread Face and Me is a 2023 film directed by Billy Luther with a screenplay written by Billy Luther.
The cast stars young actors Keir Tallman as Benny and Charley Hogan as “Frybread Face” aka Dawn.
The movie takes place in the summer of 1990, where young Benny is sent to the Navajo rez after growing up in San Diego to spend a summer with his grandmother. There, he reconnects with his family on his mother’s side and meets his cousin who the family calls Frybread because of her round face, but is really named Dawn.
Benny connects to his heritage for the first time and gets to see Navajo life. As a “city Indian” at first, Benny struggles to adapt but eventually he becomes friends with his cousin, Dawn, becoming the only person to call her by her first name and correct people on it.
The film is a coming-of-age drama, and while slow-paced, is worth it for the storytelling, the performances, and seeing a glimpse at Navajo life and culture.
