My Name is Loh Kiwan is a 2024 film written and directed by Kim Hee-Jin. The film tells the story of Loh Kiwan, a young North Korean defector who has to flee to China with his mother. After his mother dies in a tragic accident, Loh Kiwan’s uncle helps get him out of the country to Brussels, Belgium. There, he tries to find his place as an asylum seeker but struggles to get citizenship.

After connecting with a beautiful, wealthy girl named Marie who is a sharpshooter and a thief, Loh Kiwan and the girl connect over their complicated pasts and try to make it in a world that does not make it easy for either of them to belong. Marie’s complicated addiction issues keep her in a dark, dangerous world of sports betting, and Loh Kiwans status as an asylum seeker makes it so he is constantly in danger of getting deported.

The only real connection they have is to each other. Eventually, Marie’s dangerous past complicates Loh Kiwan’s attempts to get citizenship, forcing them apart. But the two find a way to reunite, and ultimately, make a better life for themselves.

The film deals with complicated themes such as suicide, abuse, and addiction, but the actors in the film, Song Joong-Ki, who plays Loh Kiwan, and Choi Sung-eun give stunning performances that will leave you sobbing after.
