The Problem with Nostalgia

The problem with nostalgia reboots is that studios will greenlight something based on a name. They won’t put any effort into creating anything new which means we get the same shows and movies for 20+ years.

The other thing, particularly with something like Harry Potter or Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, is that those books/shows are connected to creators that are still alive who people have spoke up against and their terrible beliefs/behavior.

J.K. Rowling is anti-trans and repeatedly uses her money to fund anti-trans legislation. The whole cast of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer spoke up about having horrible experiences with Joss Whedon who was verbally abusive and manipulative on set. You might not think that’s a big deal because it’s not physical, but trauma from, for example, your boss being told they want you dead like he did to James Marsters, is still something that no one should have to go through.

When re-boots like this get made, they bring attention to the original television show, or movie, or books, making more profit for those creators and furthering their terrible agenda. There’s also been a recent push to “uncancel” Joss Whedon, and if we start normalizing shit like that, anytime someone speaks out about abuse whether verbal or physical, they will simply wait a few years and try to rebrand.

Culture feels stagnant right now because it’s rare for us to have anything new. We have to invest in the arts and that means writers and directors who have new perspectives and stories to tell instead of recycling the same ten because the studio can sell a t-shirt.
