The Possession is a 2012 horror movie by the same screenwriter, Juliet Snowden, who wrote the Ouija movies. The film stars Jeffery Dean Morgan as Clyde Brenek, a basketball coach going through a divorce with his wife, Stephanie, played by Kyra Sedgewick. After one of their daughters, ten-year-old Emily, becomes fixated with an antique box she got at a yard sale, Clyde becomes increasingly concerned at his daughter’s strange behavior as she grows more obsessed with it and continues acting strangely. When it becomes clear Emily is possessed, Clyde seeks out the help of a Jewish Rabbi to save his daughter.
Similar to the Ouija sequel, there were mentions of Poland and references to Jewish culture in this one. Interestingly, it was another case where it was a spirit, not a demon possessing the person. Although the spirit was described as malevolent.
The cast also included Madison Davenport, who you might recognize as Kate Fuller, from the Netflix television show, From Dusk Till Dawn, directed by Robert Rodriguez.
Another strange case where I kept on watching mostly because of the acting. The cast gives fairly good performances, but the storytelling in this case was disjointed. Everything seemed too rushed with not enough explanation and there’s no real ending. Sometimes that can be good, but if you watch the film, there’s a shot at the end that will definitely leave you a little confused as to if the ending was intentional or if that was done by accident.
I jumped once, and was confused by the rest of it because they tried giving the box a backstory but never connected it back.
I’d give it a 3.5, just because I enjoyed seeing Kyra Sedgewick and Jeffery Dean Morgan playing opposite of each other. It’s not terrible, but I think it could have been developed more.
