With the release of The Epstein List, I can’t help but think about how many companies are connected to the sex trafficking ring Google. Microsoft. Meta. Things that we use every day, which continue to keep men in power where they can continue to go unchecked. What we need is a word processing program that does not put money in the hands of Bill Gates. Or a search engine.
Or an Excel and QuickBooks alternative.
Or social media apps that aren’t owned by assholes incentivized to incite hate for profit. I would love a word processing program that doesn’t rely on AI. I would love a search engine not owned by a fucking creep.
The same for social media.
If I were a woman in STEM, I would take the opportunity now and build such programs. Money is what gives these men power and if we cut them off at the source by providing alternatives, then we are not beholden to men who think of us as less than. I would like not to cringe every time I open a word document or use a search engine as I remember headlines screaming at me about the horrible things these people have done.
Their reach is too far. If you have been scared to make an alternative thinking no one will use it, I assure you there’s an audience for it. The same goes for computers, phones, and tablets. If you think you have something new to offer to the world of tech, now is your time. Do it.
